See-through: the detail that transforms your outfit

I'll let you into a secret. To tell the truth it's not so much of a secret, it’s one of those things you don't notice, even if it's right under your nose, and when someone points it out, you say: "Now why didn't I think of that?"

The season of cocktails, dinners and parties has begun, and you want to feel at ease without losing sleep over it. You're not like your colleague upstairs; she practically brings a wardrobe into the office.

Before leaving, she disappears into the bathroom, and half an hour later she has changed from head to toe, done her hair and is sporting evening make-up. Let's get this straight: I admire such wonderfully organised women from the bottom of my heart.

The times I’ve tried, I forgot my shoes, I’ve ended up in an evening dress and cowboy boots, a perfect combination if you're planning a night out at some underground club, but definitely not appreciated at a charity gala.

SEE-THROUGH

When you live in a big city (and you're not Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada) it's hard to start from scratch for a full-blown restyling, so if you're also part of the "Stylish without hassle" team, you can play the wildcard of wildcards, suitable at any latitude and at any time of the year:

SEE-THROUGH

How to style see-through for a day-to-night look

Is that it? What were you expecting, the revelation of the fourth secret of Fatima? I'm talking about see-through, be honest, had you thought of it? We tend to consider the see-through look as the zenith of seduction and I certainly wouldn’t want to negate that. But I would invite you to decontextualise it and enjoy it in a different spirit. If I slip out of my immaculate shirt with a bow matched with my my beautiful office trouser suit and replace it with a black tulle T-shirt, I change the mood in a single move. And what if I change out the below items? I hang on to my grey jacket, and instead of a pencil skirt, I put on a pleated, mesh-lined version that’s perfect even with a pair of low-heeled black boots.

And if I really can't resist and want to immediately show off the red silk georgette dress I got for the holidays, I’d go with the third option: leggings and a turtleneck underneath with the dress slipped casually on top.

The touch of style to enhance your look

The extra touch? Off with the tights, put on those day-time ballet flats with bare ankles. Believe me, it's guaranteed to make a great impression, and when you wear it on its own for New Year's Eve, with high-heeled sandals and a pair of extra-large earrings, it will be a whole different story.
